JLPT N5

~んです

explaining, emphasizing, seeking explanation

Structure

Verb (plain form) + んです / い-Adjective + んです / な-Adjective + なんです / Noun + なんです

How it works

This nuanced expression is used to explain a situation, give reasons, or inquire about something in a more explanatory or emphatic way. It adds a sense of context or background to a statement.

Examples

どうして遅れたんですか。電車が遅れたんです。

Why were you late? The train was delayed.

Common mistakes

Overusing it in situations where a simple statement without explanation is sufficient.

Tip

Think of it as adding 'the reason is...' or 'it's that...' before your statement.
