Lesson 9 of 40

Vocabulary Sprint v09 — this, that, and the word that means both yes and no

about 12 minutes

Aki is at the counter of the Komorebi House café, pointing to one of two cakes on display.

After this lesson you can

  • Make 結構です unambiguous by putting はい or いいえ in front of it.
  • Use 大きな before a noun and 大きい to end a sentence.

Words this lesson teaches

結構
fine, splendid — and also no thank you; 結構です can decline as easily as accept
あそこ
over there — the あ of v06's あっち, away from both speakers
そこ
there, where you are — the そ of そっち
こちら
this way, this person — the formal こっち, and a polite way to present somebody
そちら
that way, your side — the formal そっち, and a polite you
あちら
over there, that person — the formal あっち, and it points politely
大きな
big — only before a noun; 大きい does that and also ends a sentence
小さな
small — the same restriction, against 小さい
もっと
more — and not to be confused with w14's 最も, the superlative
とても
very — what you say, where w14's 非常に is what you write
たいへん
very, and also awful — たいへんな こと is a serious matter
たぶん
probably — pairs with でしょう, so たぶん 行くでしょう
だんだん
gradually — this is the word w13 said そろそろ is not
ゆっくりと
slowly, unhurriedly — the と is optional, and ゆっくり alone is commoner
すぐに
at once, right away — and すぐ alone works the same
しかし
however — written, and more formal than w14's けれども
そして
and then — joins sentences in sequence; そうして is the fuller form
それでは
well then, in that case — shortened to では and じゃ in speech
みんな
everyone, all — the spoken form of w12's 皆; 皆さん addresses them
自分
oneself — it takes its person from the sentence, so it means whoever the subject is
所
a place — and, after a verb, the point at which: 帰るところ, about to leave
ほんとう
true, the truth — written 本当, and ほんとうですか asks really?

The scene itself is in the app.
