Vocabulary Sprints

Lesson 3 of 40

Vocabulary Sprint v03 — clothes, and why a hat is not worn

about 12 minutes

Inside the café, Maya is shrugging off her jacket, her handbag resting on a nearby chair.

After this lesson you can

  • Choose 着る, はく, かぶる, する or かける for a given garment.
  • Use 黄色 and 緑 before a noun, which needs い or の rather than nothing.

Words this lesson teaches

服
clothes — the general word, and it takes 着る
洋服
Western clothes — named against 和服; in practice 服 is what people say
ワイシャツ
a business shirt — from white shirt, reanalysed in Japanese as ワイ
セーター
a jumper, a sweater — 着る, because it goes over the shoulders
コート
a coat — and, separately, a tennis court
背広
a men's suit — dated; w10's スーツ is the current word
ズボン
trousers — legs, so はく and never 着る
スカート
a skirt — legs again, so はく
靴下
socks — 靴 shoe plus 下 under, so under-shoes; はく
靴
shoes — はく, and taken off at the door of a Japanese home
スリッパ
slippers — what you put on indoors once the 靴 are off
帽子
a hat or cap — the head, so かぶる, and never 着る
ネクタイ
a tie — it fastens, so ネクタイを する; しめる also works
眼鏡
glasses — 眼 eye plus 鏡, the mirror of w09; and they take かける
ハンカチ
a handkerchief — clipped from ハンカチーフ, by the rule w09 gave
ポケット
a pocket
ボタン
a button — on a shirt and on a machine alike
財布
a wallet, a purse — 財 wealth plus 布 cloth, from w11c
洗濯
laundry, washing clothes — 洗濯する, and 洗 is the 洗 of 洗う
せっけん
soap — written 石鹸; the syllabus glosses it "Economy", which is simply wrong
黄色
yellow — a noun; before another noun it needs 黄色い or 黄色の
緑
green — a noun only, so 緑の and never 緑い

The scene itself is in the app.
