JLPT N3
おかげで
Thanks to ~
Structure
Plain form おかげで
How it works
This grammar point is used to express that a positive result occurred because of someone or something's influence. It literally means 'thanks to,' and while it is mostly used for good things, it can occasionally be used sarcastically for negative outcomes. It follows nouns with the particle 'no,' and adjectives or verbs in their plain forms.
Examples
先生のおかげで、試験に合格できました。
Thanks to my teacher, I was able to pass the exam.
天気がいいおかげで、富士山が綺麗に見えます。
Thanks to the good weather, Mt. Fuji is clearly visible.
薬を飲んだおかげで、風邪がすぐに治りました。
Thanks to taking the medicine, my cold was cured quickly.
Common mistakes
Don't confuse 'okage de' with 'sei de' (せいで). Use 'okage de' for positive results and 'sei de' for negative results (fault/blame).
Tip
To remember the difference, think of the 'O' in 'Okage' as 'Oh yeah!' (happy result) and the 'S' in 'Sei' as 'Sorry/Sad' (bad result).
