JLPT N3
くせに
Even though / Despite (critical)
Structure
Plain form くせに
How it works
This expression is used to express strong criticism, blame, or contempt toward someone's behavior that contradicts their situation or status. It is much more informal and judgmental than 'noni,' and it should never be used to describe oneself. It literally means 'despite the fact that' but carries a nuance of 'of all people' or 'how dare (they).'
Examples
彼は何も知らないくせに、いつも偉そうに話す。
Even though he knows nothing, he always talks as if he's important.
弟のくせに、兄に向かって生意気だ。
For a little brother, he's being very cheeky toward his older brother.
彼女は自分で行くと言ったくせに、まだ準備をしていない。
Even though she was the one who said she'd go, she hasn't even started getting ready yet.
Common mistakes
Do not use 'kuseni' to refer to your own humble actions or polite situations; it is strictly for criticising others. Use 'noni' for general contradiction without the insulting tone.
Tip
Think of 'kuseni' as being related to the word 'kuse' (habit). It implies that the person has a 'bad habit' of acting inconsistently with the facts.
