JLPT N3

さえ

Even ~

Structure

Noun さえ

How it works

The particle 'さえ' is used to emphasize an extreme or unexpected example to imply that if even that is true, then everything else must naturally be true as well. When used with nouns, it replaces particles like 'が' and 'を', but follows particles like 'に' or 'で'. It carries a nuance of surprise or showing the minimum requirement.

Examples

ひらがなさえ書けないのに、漢字が書けるわけがない。

I can't even write hiragana, so there's no way I can write kanji.

忙しくて、昼ご飯を食べる時間さえありませんでした。

I was so busy that I didn't even have time to eat lunch.

そんなことは子供さえ知っている。

Even a child knows something like that.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse 'さえ' with 'まで'. While both can mean 'even', 'さえ' emphasizes a minimum threshold or extreme example, whereas 'まで' implies an unexpected extent or addition.

Tip

Think of 'さえ' as 'even the most basic/obvious thing'. If you see 'さえ...ば' (the conditional form), it means 'If only...', which is another common N3 pattern.
