JLPT N3

つもりで

With the intention of, as if, intending to

Structure

Verb plain form / Noun の + つもりで

How it works

This means to do something with the intention of doing another action, or to do something 'as if' a certain condition were true.

Examples

初めて日本に行くつもりで、観光ガイドを読んだ。

I read the tourist guide as if I were going to Japan for the first time.

Common mistakes

Confusing the 'as if' meaning with 『~ふりをする』. 『~つもりで』 implies acting with that mindset, not necessarily deceiving others.

Tip

Think of it as 'in the frame of mind that...' or 'assuming that...'.
