JLPT N3

~としたら

If, assuming that

Structure

Verb plain form / Noun だ / Na-adjective だ / I-adjective + としたら

How it works

This grammar point is used to introduce a hypothetical condition or assumption, often followed by a consequence or a question based on that assumption.

Examples

もし留学するとしたら、どこの国に行きたいですか。

If you were to study abroad, which country would you want to go to?

Common mistakes

Using it interchangeably with simple 『たら』 or 『ば』 when a stronger sense of assumption or 'what if' is not intended.

Tip

It's like saying 'Hypothetically speaking, if X... then Y?'
