JLPT N3

~にすぎない

Nothing more than; merely

Structure

Verb plain form + にすぎない | Noun + にすぎない | い-adj plain form + にすぎない | な-adj stem + にすぎない

How it works

~にすぎない is used to emphasize that something is merely, only, or nothing more than the stated thing, often downplaying its significance or extent.

Examples

それはただの噂にすぎない。

That is nothing more than a rumor.

Common mistakes

Overusing it to sound humble when a more direct or neutral statement is appropriate; it carries a nuance of 'it's *just* this much and no more'.

Tip

Think of it as adding 'just' or 'only' to express that something is very limited or not as significant as it might seem.
