JLPT N3
~ば~ほど
the more...the more...
Structure
Verb-ba form + Verb-dictionary form + ほど / い-adj (ければ) + い-adj + ほど / な-adj (であれば) + な-adj + なほど
How it works
This pattern is used to show a proportional relationship between two changing conditions or states. As one condition increases or decreases, the other also changes accordingly.
Examples
勉強すればするほど、日本語が楽しくなる。
The more I study, the more enjoyable Japanese becomes.
Common mistakes
Incorrectly conjugating the first verb/adjective into the 'ba' form.
Tip
Visualize two scales moving together: 'if A happens more, then B happens more/less'.
