JLPT N3

~まま

As it is, as is, without change

Structure

Verb plain form / Noun + の / な-adjective な / い-adjective + まま

How it works

This grammar point indicates that an action or state remains unchanged, or that something is done while a certain condition persists.

Examples

電気をつけたまま寝てしまった。

I fell asleep with the lights on.

Common mistakes

Confusing it with 『~通りに』 which means 'as X dictates/in the manner of X', rather than 'while X remains'.

Tip

Visualize something being 'left as is' or 'remaining in the same state'.
