JLPT N3

~ように

so that; in order to; like/as if

Structure

Verb-dictionary form + ように / Verb-nai form + ように / Noun + のように

How it works

Used to express purpose or intention ('so that,' 'in order to') when the speaker wants to achieve a certain state or outcome, or to make a request ('please'). It can also mean 'like' or 'as if' when comparing.

Examples

忘れ物がないように、荷物をチェックした。

I checked my luggage so that I wouldn't forget anything.

Common mistakes

Confusing it with 'ために'; 'ように' is for indirect purpose often relating to what one can or cannot do, while 'ために' is for direct purpose.

Tip

Think of 'ように' as setting a goal or expressing a resemblance.
