What it explains

What 166 characters actually buys you

The N4 set is 166 characters, and with the 79 from N5 that is 245. It is not enough to read a newspaper and it is enough for a timetable, a menu, a shop sign, a form, and the notices on a door — which is most of the writing a person actually has to read in a day. The next thousand characters are for books. These 245 are for living somewhere.

The five positions, one last time

亻 and 氵 on the left, 心 underneath, 辶 wrapping the corner, 宀 as a lid, 刂 on the right. Five positions and about a dozen radicals, and that is the whole apparatus this track handed over. It will not tell you a reading and it will not always tell you a meaning. What it does is turn a wall of strokes into two or three things you can name, which is the difference between memorising a shape and reading a character.

The scene itself is in the app.

Lesson one of this track is free to read in full. From lesson two on, the story, the audio and the review are part of a free account.
