What it explains
方 is a direction, a method, and a person
Read ホウ it is a direction: 方向. Attached to a verb stem it is a way of doing: 使い方, how to use something, 書き方, how to write it. Read かた it is a person, politely: 「この方は 先生です」 — this person is the teacher, and it is more respectful than 人. Three jobs, and the reading tells you which.
去年, 今年, 来年
去 gone, 今 now, 来 coming — the year that left, the year here, the year arriving. 今 and 来 were both taught at N5, so 去 completes a set of three the same way 夏 and 秋 completed the seasons. The same three characters build 先月 last month and 来月 next month, and the pattern is worth noticing because it costs nothing once seen.
The scene itself is in the app.
Lesson one of this track is free to read in full. From lesson two on, the story, the audio and the review are part of a free account.
