Vocabulary Sprints

Lesson 16 of 40

Vocabulary Sprint v14a — weather and creatures, and two words for かぜ

about 10 minutes

Ren towels off a damp Mugi at the entrance to the café, as if they have just come in from the rain.

After this lesson you can

  • Say 風邪を 引きました, and tell 風 from 風邪.
  • Choose 鳴く for an animal and 泣く for a person.

Words this lesson teaches

風
wind — 風が 吹きます, with v11b's 吹く and its が
風邪
a cold — 風 plus 邪, harm; and you catch it with 引く, from v11a
鳴く
to cry, of an animal — w06b's 泣く is a person and 鳴る is a thing
雪
snow — 雪が 降ります, with v11b's 降る
夏
summer — one of the four 季節, from w11b's list
冬
winter — when w09's 暖房 earns its keep
海
the sea — where you 泳ぐ when v05's プール is closed
昼
midday, daytime — the 昼 of v02's 昼ご飯 and w11a's 昼休み
夜
night — and 夜 is where w13's 昨夜 gets its second character
昨夜
last night — read ゆうべ here, though the characters would give さくや
村
a village — smaller than w16a's 市, and 村 is also an administrative unit
横
the side, beside — and horizontal, against 縦, vertical
動物
an animal — 動 moving plus 物 thing; w10's 動物園 is where they are kept
魚
a fish — and what w16c's 釣る catches
犬
a dog — and in Japanese a dog 鳴く rather than barks

The scene itself is in the app.
