- a celebration, and a congratulatory gift — 祝う trimmed, with a fused お
- 寝坊
- oversleeping — 寝坊する, and 寝坊 alone can mean a person who does it

- being out when somebody calls — a state, not an act; 留守番電話 is an answering machine
- 趣味
- a hobby — and also taste: 趣味がいい means somebody has good taste
- 代わり
- a substitute, instead — 代わる trimmed; おかわり is a second helping
- 漫画
- a comic, manga — 画 is a picture, the same 画 as in 画面, a screen
- 釣る
- to fish, to catch with a line — its stem 釣り is the noun, as this course keeps finding
