Vocabulary Sprints

Lesson 39 of 40

Vocabulary Sprint w16b — the body, the building, and かたい three ways

about 10 minutes

Haru winces as he rolls his shoulder, looking like he has a stiff muscle from working on his laptop at the café.

After this lesson you can

  • Choose between 堅い, 硬い and 固い for a given thing.
  • Build 読み方 and 使い方 from the 方 of 泳ぎ方.

Words this lesson teaches

固い
firm, solid — also written 堅い for sturdy and 硬い for rigid; all three are かたい
泳ぎ方
how to swim — 泳ぐ's stem plus 方; the same 方 gives 読み方 and 使い方
二階建て
two-storey — a number of floors plus 建て, from w03's 建てる
裏
the reverse side, the back — the opposite of w11b's 表
腕
an arm — and skill: 腕がいい means good at the job
首
the neck — and 首になる is to be dismissed from a job
虫
an insect — one word for all of them, spiders included in ordinary speech
隅
a corner, seen from inside — the outside corner of a building is 角
寺
a Buddhist temple — the one w10 promised, against 神社 for a Shinto shrine
湖
a lake — the character carries the water radical, as 泳 and 深い do
倍
times, -fold — 二倍 is double, and 倍 alone often means twice as much
遠く
the distance, far off — 遠い used as a noun, exactly as 近く is

The scene itself is in the app.
