Vocabulary Sprints

Lesson 6 of 40

Vocabulary Sprint v06 — this way, that way, and which way

about 10 minutes

In the Komorebi House café, Ren gestures with an open hand, as if explaining directions to someone off-screen.

After this lesson you can

  • Place こっち, そっち, あっち and どっち in the system you already know.
  • Use 方 for a person where 彼 would be wrong.

Words this lesson teaches

こっち
this way, over here — near the speaker; the formal partner is こちら
そっち
that way, where you are — near the listener; formally そちら
あっち
over there — away from both of you; formally あちら
どっち
which way, which of two — the question member; formally どちら
向こう
the far side, over there — from 向かう in w05, so the direction faced
方
a person, politely — この方, あの方; the word to use where w12 warned off 彼
道
a road, a way — and the 道 of w10's 柔道, a way of doing something
地下鉄
the underground — 地下 below ground plus 鉄, iron, from 鉄道, railway
自動車
a motor car — 自動 self-moving plus 車; 車 alone is what people say
タクシー
a taxi — caught with 拾う or 捕まえる, from w06a and w06b
飛行機
an aeroplane — 飛行 flight plus 機, a machine; w05's 飛行場 shares the 飛行
メートル
a metre — from French, which is why it is not メーター
グラム
a gram
キログラム
a kilogram — shortened to キロ, which also does duty for the kilometre
キロメートル
a kilometre — also shortened to キロ, so the sentence has to decide
ゼロ
zero — what people say, in scores and temperatures alike
零
zero, as a character — read れい, and 零時 is midnight
番号
a number in a sequence — 番 the 番 of w09's 番組, plus 号
背
height, and the back — the same character as w12's 背中

The scene itself is in the app.
