What it explains
〜てみる: do it and find out
The て form plus みる. It is the verb for see, and the sense is close: you do the thing in order to see the result. 「たべてみます」 is I'll taste it. Offering it to someone — 「やってみてください」 — is gentler than a plain request, because it frames the task as an experiment they can abandon.
〜ておく: do it now, for later
The て form plus おく, to put or place. You do the thing and leave the result standing. It covers preparation — 「よんでおきます」, I'll read it beforehand — and also leaving well alone: 「そのままにしておいてください」, please leave it as it is. In speech it contracts to 〜とく: 「ならべとく」.
