Vocabulary Sprints

Lesson 14 of 40

Vocabulary Sprint v12 — a complete pair, and the を that is not an object

about 12 minutes

Mr. Sato sits at a table, smiling as he holds up a matching pair of traditional Japanese teacups.

After this lesson you can

  • Use 並ぶ with が and 並べる with を, having been given both.
  • Say 道を 渡る and 駅に 着く, and say why the particles differ.

Words this lesson teaches

並ぶ
to line up, to queue — が, because the people do it themselves
並べる
to lay out in a row — を, because you do it to the things
消える
to go out, to vanish — が; the other half of v11b's 消す
渡る
to cross — を for the road or bridge crossed; v11b's 渡す is the を half
曲る
to turn — を for the corner turned; the syllabus writes 曲る, the world 曲がる
降りる
to get off, to go down — を for the vehicle or the stairs left behind
着く
to arrive — に and not を, because arriving reaches a point
出かける
to go out, to set off — に or へ for where; nothing is done to anything
走る
to run — を for the ground covered, as 渡る does: 道を 走る
押す
to push — を; the opposite of v11a's 引く, and both are on Japanese doors
弾く
to play a stringed instrument — the same ひく as v11a's 引く, to pull
頼む
to ask for, to order — を for the thing, に for the person
困る
to be at a loss, to be in difficulty — が, and usually 困って います
疲れる
to get tired — 疲れました for now being tired, which is a past form for a present state
生まれる
to be born — で for the place, and it is always this form, never 生む
練習
practice — 練習する, and 習 is the 習 of w07's 予習
大好き
to love, to like very much — な, and が for the thing liked, never を

The scene itself is in the app.
