Vocabulary Sprints

Lesson 12 of 40

Vocabulary Sprint v11a — the day's verbs, and knowing as a state

about 12 minutes

In the warm light of the café, Aki is writing in a journal with a look of concentration on her face.

After this lesson you can

  • Say 知って います and 知りません, and say why they are not symmetrical.
  • Tell 切る from 着る once either one is conjugated.

Words this lesson teaches

知る
to come to know — but say 知って います for knowing, and 知りません for not
覚える
to memorise, to learn by heart — the act, where 知る is the result
切る
to cut — 切ります, 切って; the same dictionary sound as 着る and not the same verb
着る
to put on, from the shoulders down — 着ます, 着て; v03 gave the body-part rule
座る
to sit down — takes に for where, because sitting is arriving at a place
置く
to put down, to place — and the plain verb inside 〜ておく, which N4.17 teaches
洗う
to wash — hands, dishes, a car; v03's 洗濯 shares the 洗
磨く
to brush or polish — teeth and shoes; you do not 洗う your teeth
あびる
to have a shower, to be showered with — シャワーを あびる, and v04 had the noun
使う
to use — and w16b's 使い方 is this verb's stem plus 方
住む
to live somewhere — に for the place, and usually 住んで います, a state
働く
to work — で for the place, because a workplace is where an action happens
泳ぐ
to swim — で for the water, and w16b's 泳ぎ方 is its stem
引く
to pull — the opposite of 押す; and 辞書を 引く is to look a word up
乗る
to get on, to ride — に and not を, because boarding is arriving
終わる
to end, to come to an end — が, because it ends by itself; the syllabus writes 終る

The scene itself is in the app.
