JLPT N1
いかんによらず
Regardless of
Structure
Noun のいかんによらず
How it works
This formal expression indicates that something is decided or happens regardless of the nature, quantity, or degree of the preceding noun. It is often used in official contexts, contracts, or public notices to emphasize that there are no exceptions. It can be interchanged with 'いかんにかかわらず' but carries a slightly more formal tone.
Examples
理由のいかんによらず、無断欠席は認められません。
Regardless of the reason, unauthorized absences will not be permitted.
合否の結果のいかんによらず、通知は全員に発送されます。
Regardless of the pass/fail result, notifications will be sent to everyone.
国籍のいかんによらず、能力のある人材を積極的に採用する。
We will actively hire talented individuals regardless of their nationality.
Common mistakes
Do not use 'いかんによらず' with simple verbs; it must follow a noun (often followed by the particle 'の') that contains an inherent range or variety, such as 'reason,' 'result,' or 'weather.'
Tip
Think of this grammar as a formal version of 'に関係なく' (ni kankeinaku). When you see 'いかん' (如何), remember it translates to 'how things are/will be,' so the phrase literally means 'not depending on how things are.'
