JLPT N1
に足る
Worthy of / Sufficient for
Structure
Verb dictionary form に足る
How it works
This formal expression indicates that something has sufficient value or merits a certain action. It is most commonly used with verbs like 'miru' (to see), 'shinzuru' (to believe), or 'kentou' (to consider). The negative form 'ni taranai' is also frequently used to mean 'not worth' or 'insignificant'.
Examples
彼は信頼に足る人物だ。
He is a person worthy of trust.
その事件は、再調査するに足る証拠が見つかった。
Evidence surfaced that is sufficient to warrant a re-investigation of the case.
インターネット上の情報は、必ずしも信じるに足りるものばかりではない。
Information on the internet is not always necessarily something worthy of belief.
Common mistakes
Do not use 'ni tatte' or other te-forms; the dictionary form of the verb must directly precede 'ni taru'.
Tip
Think of 'taru' as the classical version of 'tariru' (to be enough). If something 'reaches the level of being enough' for an action, it is 'ni taru'.
