JLPT N1

が最後

Once ~ happens (no going back)

Structure

Verb た-form が最後

How it works

This grammar point describes a situation where once a certain action occurs or a condition is met, an irreversible and usually negative result follows. It emphasizes that there is no turning back once the process has started. It is often used to express a warning or a sense of inevitability.

Examples

彼はギャンブルに手を出したが最後、全財産を失うまでやめないだろう。

Once he starts gambling, he probably won't stop until he has lost his entire fortune.

うちの猫は一度外に出したが最後、なかなか家に戻ってこない。

Once our cat is let outside, it doesn't come back home easily.

この漫画は読み始めたが最後、面白すぎて徹夜することになる。

Once you start reading this manga, it's so interesting that you'll end up staying up all night.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse this with simple conditional forms like '~たら'. 'が最後' implies a definitive, irreversible point of no return, often with a negative connotation.

Tip

This expression is almost always preceded by the Past Tense (た-form). Think of it as 'The moment X happened, it was the end (the last) of the previous state.'
