JLPT N1

ともなると

When it comes to / At the level of

Structure

Noun ともなると

How it works

This expression is used to emphasize that when a situation or condition reaches a certain high level, special consequences or natural changes follow. It often suggests that while something might be normal at a lower level, it becomes exceptional or challenging at this specific stage. It is commonly used with nouns representing time, social status, or significant events.

Examples

部長ともなると、自分の仕事だけでなく部下の責任も負わなければならない。

When you reach the level of a department manager, you must take responsibility not only for your own work but also for your subordinates.

プロのピアニストともなると、一日の練習時間は10時間を超えることもある。

When it comes to being a professional pianist, daily practice time can sometimes exceed ten hours.

12月ともなると、街はすっかりクリスマスムード一色になる。

When it gets to December, the streets become completely filled with a Christmas atmosphere.

Common mistakes

Avoid using this for trivial or low-level stages; it should be used for significant milestones or roles that carry a sense of gravity or distinct change.

Tip

Think of it as 'Once [X] happens, it's a whole different story.' It is very similar to 'になると,' but 'ともなると' adds a stronger emphasis on the special status or the extremity of the situation.
