JLPT N2

いつのまにか

Before one knew it, unnoticed

Structure

いつのまにか + Sentence

How it works

「いつのまにか」 describes an action or change that happened without the speaker's awareness or without noticing. It implies a subtle or gradual process that went unnoticed until it was complete.

Examples

いつのまにか、時計の針は午前0時を回っていた。

Before I knew it, the clock hands had passed midnight.

Common mistakes

Confusing it with 突然 (suddenly); いつのまにか implies a lack of awareness, while 突然 refers to abruptness.

Tip

Think of it as 'time slipped away' or 'it happened behind my back' to capture the unawareness.
