JLPT N2

にかけて

From ~ through / Over the period

Structure

Noun から Noun にかけて

How it works

This grammar point expresses a range in time or space, roughly meaning 'from... through...' or 'over a period/area.' While 'から〜まで' highlights specific start and end points, 'にかけて' is used when the boundaries are somewhat fuzzy or continuous throughout the range.

Examples

昨夜から今朝にかけて、強い雨が降り続いた。

Strong rain continued to fall from last night through this morning.

関東地方から東北地方にかけて、大きな地震がありました。

There was a large earthquake across the area from the Kanto region to the Tohoku region.

明日は昼から夕方にかけて、気温が上がるでしょう。

Tomorrow, the temperature will likely rise from the afternoon through the evening.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse this usage with '〜にかけては', which means 'when it comes to' or 'in terms of skill.'

Tip

Think of 'にかけて' as a 'bridge' covering a whole area or duration, rather than just two separate points on a map or calendar.
