JLPT N2
に限り
Limited to / Only for
Structure
Noun に限り
How it works
This grammar point is used to express that a specific rule, privilege, or exception applies only to a particular group or situation. It is formal and often seen in signs, announcements, or public notices. It emphasizes that this is a special case and does not apply elsewhere.
Examples
本日、雨の日に限り全品10%オフです。
Today, only on this rainy day, all items are 10% off.
初めてのお客様に限り、無料体験レッスンを受けられます。
The free trial lesson is available only for first-time customers.
このチケットは、有効期限内に限り使用可能です。
This ticket is usable only within its expiration date.
Common mistakes
Do not confuse this with に限って (ni kagitte), which is used for unfortunate timing or expressing strong trust in someone/something (e.g., 'Of all people, he wouldn't do that').
Tip
Think of 'に限り' as a more formal version of 'だけ' often used by businesses or organizations to set conditions for special offers.
