JLPT N2
に伴い
Along with / As ~ happens
Structure
Noun に伴い / Verb dictionary form + の + に伴い
How it works
This grammar point expresses that as one change occurs, another change happens simultaneously or as a result. Using 'に伴い' (ni tomonai) is more formal than 'と一緒に' and is frequently used in news, business, and academic contexts to describe trends or large-scale transitions. It can be used as a conjunction or as 'に伴う' to modify a noun.
Examples
人口の減少に伴い、労働力が不足している。
Along with the decrease in population, there is a shortage of labor.
デジタルトランスフォーメーションの進展に伴い、新しいスキルが必要とされる。
As digital transformation progresses, new skills are being required.
台風の接近に伴い、午後の電車は運休となります。
As the typhoon approaches, afternoon trains will be suspended.
Common mistakes
Mixing up the word order: ensure the 'cause' or 'major change' comes before に伴い, and the 'consequence' follows it.
Tip
Think of this as a 'proportional change' marker; if you can imagine a graph where one line moves and another follows it, に伴い is the perfect fit.
