JLPT N2

にかわって

In place of / On behalf of

Structure

Noun にかわって

How it works

This grammar point is used to indicate that someone or something is taking the place of another person or thing. It is commonly used when someone is acting as a representative or when a newer method or item replaces an older one.

Examples

出張中の父にかわって、私がお客様をご案内します。

On behalf of my father who is on a business trip, I will show the guests around.

最近はメールにかわって、チャットアプリが連絡手段の主流になっている。

Recently, chat apps have become the mainstream means of communication in place of email.

病気の先生にかわって、新しい講師が授業を担当することになった。

In place of the sick teacher, a new instructor has been assigned to take over the class.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse this with 'にかえて', which is often used for replacing a formal action with a simpler one (e.g., sending a gift instead of a greeting), whereas 'にかわって' focus on representation or total substitution.

Tip

When the subject is a person, it usually means 'representing' them. When the subject is an object, it usually means 'receding and being replaced' by something newer or more efficient.
