JLPT N2

を中心に

Centered around / Focusing on

Structure

Noun を中心に

How it works

This grammar point is used to indicate that a specific person, place, or thing is the primary focus, center, or core of an activity or situation. It takes a noun as its base and suggests that while other things may be involved, the mentioned noun is the most important element. It is commonly used in business, news, and formal descriptions.

Examples

駅前を中心に、新しい商業施設が次々と建設されています。

New commercial facilities are being built one after another, centered around the front of the station.

この映画は、若い女性を中心に人気が集まっています。

This movie is gaining popularity, particularly among (centered around) young women.

Let's study today, focusing primarily on grammar.

Common mistakes

Avoid confusing 'を中心に' (the focal point) with 'をとおして' (the medium/method). Use 'を中心に' when you want to highlight the most important part of a group or area.

Tip

Think of it as drawing a circle on a map; the noun before 'を中心に' is the bullseye in the middle of that circle.
