JLPT N2

に限らず

Not limited to

Structure

Noun に限らず

How it works

This structure is used to indicate that something is not limited to a specific scope, person, or time, but also applies to a broader range. It is often used to emphasize that a situation is more widespread or inclusive than one might initially think. It is common in formal writing and speeches.

Examples

この映画は子供に限らず、大人も楽しめます。

This movie can be enjoyed not only by children but by adults as well.

最近は女性に限らず、化粧をする男性も増えている。

Recently, it's not just women; the number of men who use makeup is also increasing.

平日に限らず、この店は週末も行列ができる。

Not just on weekdays, this shop has long lines on weekends too.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse it with 'に限って' (ni kagitte), which means 'particularly' or 'only in the case of.' 'に限らず' (ni kagirazu) always implies a wider scope (A and also B).

Tip

Look for the particle 'も' (also) later in the sentence; it is a very common signal that 'に限らず' is being used correctly to expand the scope.
