JLPT N2

かねない

Might / Could (undesirable)

Structure

Verb stem かねない

How it works

The grammar point 'かねない' is used to express that there is a possibility of a negative or undesirable outcome. It indicates that based on the current situation, a certain 'bad result' might occur. While it translates to 'might' or 'could,' it is strictly reserved for situations that the speaker views as problematic or dangerous.

Examples

そんなにスピードを出したら、事故を起こしかねないよ。

If you drive that fast, you might cause an accident.

休まずに働き続けると、病気になりかねません。

If you continue working without resting, you could end up getting sick.

個人情報が漏洩すれば、大きな問題になりかねない。

If personal information is leaked, it could result in a major problem.

Common mistakes

Do not use 'かねない' for positive or desired outcomes (e.g., you cannot say 'I might pass the exam' using this grammar). Use 'かもしれない' for neutral or positive possibilities.

Tip

Think of 'かねない' as the opposite of 'かねる' (to be unable to). While 'かねる' means you can't do something, 'かねない' implies that you 'cannot say for sure that it won't happen,' emphasizing the risk.
