How it works
This grammar point is used to emphasize that a specific number or quantity (such as weight, distance, or size) is surprisingly large or significant. It is typically used with large units of measurement and conveys the speaker's shock or deep impression. It is most commonly used for weight (kg/tons), length (meters/km), or price (yen/dollars).

彼は百キロからある巨体を揺らして歩いてきた。

二万円からある食事代を、彼は平気な顔で支払った。
He paid the meal check, which was as much as 20,000 yen, with a nonchalant expression.
ここから隣の町までは、十キロからある道のりだ。

Common mistakes
Do not use 'からある' with small or insignificant numbers, as the primary function of this grammar point is to express that the amount is impressively large.
Tip
Use 'からある' for measurements of weight and length; for high prices, 'からする' is used specifically (e.g., 一億円からする家), though 'からある' can sometimes be used for price as well.
