JLPT N2
からといって
Just because ~ doesn't mean
Structure
Plain form からといって
How it works
This grammar point is used to express that just because a specific reason or condition exists, it doesn't necessarily mean the expected result will follow. It is almost always paired with negative endings like 〜とは限らない (not necessarily), 〜わけではない (it doesn't mean), or 〜ない (not). It highlights that a single factor is not enough to make a definitive conclusion.
Examples
日本に住んでいるからといって、日本語が上手になるとは限らない。
Just because you live in Japan, it doesn't necessarily mean your Japanese will become proficient.
金持ちだからといって、幸せだとは限らない。
Just because someone is rich doesn't mean they are happy.
一度失敗したからといって、あきらめてはいけない。
Just because you failed once, you must not give up.
Common mistakes
Forgetting to include the negative or limiting ending (like 〜ない or 〜わけではない) at the end of the sentence.
Tip
Think of this as the 'Yes, but...' grammar. It acknowledges a premise but denies the automatic conclusion.
