JLPT N2

げ

Seems / Appears to feel ~

Structure

Adj stem げ

How it works

The suffix ~げ is added to the stem of i-adjectives or na-adjectives to express that someone looks or appears to be in a certain emotional or physical state based on their outward appearance. It is a more literary or formal version of ~そう and is primarily used to describe someone else's feelings rather than your own. It often appears in fixed expressions like 'kanashige' (sad-looking) or 'tanoshige' (joyful-looking).

Examples

彼は何か言いたげな表情でこちらを見ている。

He is looking at me with an expression that looks like he wants to say something.

子供たちは公園で楽しげに遊んでいる。

The children are playing happily (looking like they are having fun) in the park.

彼女はどこか寂しげな様子で窓の外を眺めていた。

She was gazing out the window with a somewhat lonely appearance.

Common mistakes

Do not use ~げ for objective physical properties (like 'this soup looks hot'); it is strictly for subjective feelings, emotions, or states of being.

Tip

Memorize 'ni' for adverbs (happily/tanoshige-ni) and 'na' for adjectives (sad-looking/kanashige-na) to use this grammar correctly in sentences.
