JLPT N2

さすがに

As expected, indeed, even ~ as expected

Structure

さすがに + Sentence

How it works

「さすがに」 is used to express that something lives up to expectations, or that a certain action or state is understandable given the circumstances. It can also imply a negative outcome is unavoidable even for someone capable.

Examples

彼は疲れ果てていたので、さすがに今日の練習は休んだ。

He was exhausted, so as expected, he rested from practice today.

Common mistakes

Using it simply to mean 'really' or 'truly' without the nuance of expectation or a situation living up to a reputation.

Tip

Think 'just as one would expect' or 'no wonder' when you see this adverb. It confirms an inherent quality or an expected outcome.
