JLPT N2

せいか

Perhaps because of...

Structure

Noun + のせいか / Verb plain form + せいか / い-adj + せいか / な-adj + なせいか

How it works

~せいか is used to express a possible reason for a situation, often when the speaker is not entirely sure about the cause. It suggests a causal link but without definitive certainty.

Examples

昨夜あまり寝なかったせいか、今日は頭が痛い。

Perhaps because I didn't sleep much last night, I have a headache today.

Common mistakes

Confusing it with ~おかげで (thanks to) which implies a positive outcome, or ~せいで which implies definite blame.

Tip

Remember 'せい' (responsibility/fault) suggests a cause, and 'か' (question particle) suggests uncertainty.
