JLPT N2
それにしても
Even so, nevertheless, in spite of that
Structure
それにしても + Sentence
How it works
「それにしても」 is used to acknowledge a preceding statement but then introduce a perspective or fact that contrasts with or is surprising given that statement. It expresses a sense of 'even if that's true' or 'despite that'.
Examples
彼は病気だと聞いたけど、それにしても元気そうだね。
I heard he's sick, but even so, he looks energetic.
Common mistakes
Using it when there is no contrast or surprising element; it implies a slight sense of wonder or mild contradiction.
Tip
Remember 「それにしても」 as 'even with that in mind' or 'even so, it's...' to bridge two contrasting ideas.
