JLPT N2

たしか

If I remember correctly, I believe, for sure

Structure

たしか + sentence

How it works

たしか is used when the speaker is stating something they believe to be true based on memory or recollection, but acknowledges a slight possibility of error. It can also mean 'for certain' when confirming something.

Examples

たしか、その本は図書館で借りたはずだ。

If I remember correctly, I should have borrowed that book from the library.

Common mistakes

Using it when you are absolutely certain about something, or to express doubt without any prior information.

Tip

Think of it as 'I'm pretty sure...' or 'Unless I'm mistaken...'.
