JLPT N2

なにしろ

Anyway, at any rate, after all

Structure

なにしろ + Sentence

How it works

This expression is used to emphasize a reason or circumstance. It can be translated as 'anyway,' 'at any rate,' or 'after all,' implying that the speaker is giving an explanation or excuse.

Examples

なにしろ初めてのことなので、よくわかりません。

Anyway, since it's my first time, I don't really understand.

Common mistakes

Confusing it with 'とにかく' (anyway, anyhow) which can be less explanatory and more about changing the topic or urging action.

Tip

Think of なにしろ as a way to say 'the fact is...' or 'the truth is...' when explaining something.
