JLPT N1

にあって

In (a situation/context)

Structure

Noun にあって

How it works

This grammar point expresses that someone is in a special situation, state, or circumstance. It is often used in formal writing or speeches to set the stage for an action or condition that occurs because of (or despite) that specific situation. It can mean 'under the circumstances of' or 'in a time of'.

Examples

緊急事態にあって、冷静な判断が求められている。

In an emergency situation, calm judgment is required.

不況にあっても、その企業は業績を伸ばし続けている。

Even in a recession, that company continues to grow its business performance.

父は病床にあって、なお家族の心配をしていた。

While on his deathbed, my father was still worrying about his family.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse this with geographical location; it refers to situations, roles, or eras, not physical placement (use 'で' or 'に' for simple location).

Tip

Think of it as a formal version of '〜という状況で'. It is frequently paired with abstract nouns like '逆境' (adversity), '混乱' (confusion), or '現代' (modern era).
