JLPT N2

を通じて

Through / Throughout

Structure

Noun を通じて

How it works

This grammar point is used in two main ways: to indicate a medium or intermediary through which something happens (via/through), or to express a continuous state or period (throughout). When used for time, it emphasizes that a situation persists over the entire duration.

Examples

私は友人を通じて彼女と知り合いました。

I got to know her through a friend.

この地域は一年を通じて温暖な気候です。

This region has a mild climate throughout the year.

インターネットを通じて、世界中のニュースを知ることができる。

We can learn about news from all over the world via the internet.

Common mistakes

Confusing 'を通じて' with 'を通して'. While often interchangeable, 'を通じて' is slightly more passive/natural, whereas 'を通して' often implies a more intentional process or physical passage.

Tip

If the sentence involves a person acting as a middleman (like an agent or a friend), 'を通じて' is the perfect choice to describe that connection.
