JLPT N2

ものの

Although / But

Structure

Plain form ものの

How it works

The grammar point 'ものの' is a conjunctive particle used to express a contrast, similar to 'but' or 'although'. It acknowledges a fact in the first clause but follows it with information that contradicts expectations or presents a problem. It is more formal than 'けれど' or 'が' and is often used in writing or polite speech.

Examples

大学を卒業したものの、就職先が見つからない。

Although I graduated from university, I can't find a place to work.

手術は成功したものの、まだ油断はできない。

The surgery was a success, but we cannot be complacent yet.

申し込みはしたものの、行くかどうか迷っている。

I applied, but I am still hesitant about whether to go or not.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse 'ものの' with 'ものなら'. While 'ものの' expresses contrast, 'ものなら' is used for impossible hypothetical situations (e.g., 'If I could do it...').

Tip

Think of 'ものの' as '...the fact is [A], but [B]'. It is very frequently used with the past tense (~たものの) to show that an action was completed but the desired result didn't follow.
