JLPT N1

をよそに

Ignoring / Disregarding

Structure

Noun をよそに

How it works

This grammar point is used to indicate that someone is performing an action while completely ignoring or disregarding surrounding circumstances, expectations, or concerns. It often implies a sense of surprise, shock, or criticism toward the person's indifference. It is typically used with nouns representing people's opinions, worries, or environmental situations.

Examples

親の心配をよそに、息子は勝手に大学を辞めてしまった。

Disregarding his parents' worries, the son quit university without permission.

周囲の反対をよそに、二人は結婚を決めた。

Ignoring the opposition from those around them, the two decided to get married.

台風が近づいているというニュースをよそに、海岸にはサーファーが集まっている。

Ignoring the news that a typhoon is approaching, surfers are gathering at the coast.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse this with '〜をものともせずに', which also means 'ignoring' but is used to show bravery/courage in the face of hardship, whereas '〜をよそに' usually implies coldness or a lack of concern.

Tip

Think of the word 'yoso' (elsewhere). This grammar literally implies looking 'elsewhere' instead of at the concerns or facts right in front of you.
