How it works

一方では is used to present two contrasting aspects, opinions, or facts about the same subject or situation. It introduces a different perspective or a counterpoint to what was just stated.

Examples

この映画は子どもにも人気がある。一方では、大人には少し物足りないかもしれない。

This movie is popular with children. On the other hand, it might be a little unsatisfying for adults.

Common mistakes

Using it for simple sequential actions; it specifically highlights contrast or opposing viewpoints.

Tip

Visualize a balance scale, with 'one side' being presented and then the 'other side'.
