JLPT N1
~かたわら
While, at the same time, alongside
Structure
Verb-dictionary form / Noun の + かたわら
How it works
Used to describe someone engaging in two activities simultaneously, usually one primary occupation and a secondary activity like a hobby or another job. It emphasizes the concurrent nature of these two roles or actions.
Examples
彼は会社勤めをするかたわら、小説家としても活動している。
While working for a company, he is also active as a novelist.
Common mistakes
Using it for activities that are simply simultaneous without one being a 'side' activity. It implies a degree of continuity for both.
Tip
Visualize someone juggling two different tasks. The 'かたわら' means 'on the side'.
