JLPT N2

~た上で

After Verb (and based on that)

Structure

動詞-た形 + 上で

How it works

This grammar pattern means 'after doing X and based on the result of X.' It signifies that the first action is fully completed, and the second action is performed taking into account the outcome or preparation from the first action.

Examples

よく考えた上で、新しい企画を提案しました。

After thinking carefully, I proposed a new plan.

Common mistakes

Confusing it with simple sequence like ~てから which doesn't necessarily imply the first action is a basis for the second.

Tip

Remember 'on top of doing X' or 'having done X, then Y' to highlight the sequential and foundational aspect.
