JLPT N2

~というわけではない

It doesn't mean that, not necessarily

Structure

普通形 + というわけではない (na-adjective/noun + だというわけではない)

How it works

This expression is used to deny a full or absolute conclusion based on a previous statement. It indicates that while something might appear to be true, it's not necessarily the whole truth, or there are other reasons.

Examples

野菜は毎日食べるが、嫌いなわけではない。

I eat vegetables every day, but it's not because I dislike them (it doesn't mean I dislike them).

Common mistakes

Using it to flat-out deny something; it's more about denying an implied conclusion rather than the statement itself.

Tip

Think of it as 'It's not to say that...' or 'That doesn't mean...' to soften a statement or dispute an assumption.
