JLPT N2

~と言っても

Although I say; even if I say

Structure

Plain form + と言っても

How it works

~と言っても is used to acknowledge a previous statement but then qualify it by expressing a limitation, a surprise, or a truth that contrasts with the initial impression.

Examples

日本語が話せると言っても、日常会話くらいです。

Although I say I can speak Japanese, it's only about daily conversation level.

Common mistakes

Confusing it with simple 'although' conjunctions. It specifically reacts to and qualifies a stated fact.

Tip

Imagine someone saying something, and you're adding a 'but actually...' to clarify or limit the scope of their statement.
